Berirouche Feddal is an Algerian artist whose work is devoted to the issue of the space of the souks of Algeria and its neighboring countries in the Mediterranean basin. By revisiting forms and techniques from souks worldwide, Feddal contrasts ancient artifacts with their counterfeit, mass-produced counterparts, and questions the role of the artisan in the space of the contemporary souk. Through his work, Feddal studies the interrelationship of the inhabitants and descendants of the Mediterranean basin and considers the impact of cultural exchange on traditional objects from the region in light of their current appropriations for the global marketplace.
